Time used to be more reliable,
seasons flowing from spring
to summer to autumn to winter.

Now it's chaos, false winter
followed by not-really-spring,
sprawling into summer floods
and dry falls and rain on Yule.

Red-winged blackbirds arrive in
February; honeybees stumble out
of their hive but find no flowers.

The duplicity of seasons
confuses everyone.

You’ve heard it said in the Pacific Northwest that, during the winter, we see a long stretch of bleak weather followed by a temporary rise in temperatures around mid-January, a “false winter” as it is sometimes called. Well, according to the Farmer’s Almanac for 2022-2023, the unusually warm weather we’ve been experiencing the past few weeks may just be the herald of real, honest-to-goodness spring.

The next full moon will be Tuesday, March 3. But there is also the Festival of Owls on March 6-8. I'm toying with doing an owl themed esbat during that waning moon phase. We have great horned owls around here, which is cool.

Has anyone else done an owl esbat?

Birds come and go
like clouds, like weather.

Before the snowstorm: no birds.

After the snowstorm: birds
filling the sky like clouds

sparrows, finches, cardinals,
dark-eyed juncos, tufted titmice,
chickadees, mourning doves,

and in the branches, the sound
of woodpeckers drumming,

feathered weather.

Hey DW pagans, witches, cunning folk, and friends!

My housemates and I are celebrating Sunwait this year, the English approximation for the name of a tradition I've heard described as both Swedish-humanist and modern Heathen. In a re-pagan-ing of the Advent tradition, six candles are lit for the six weeks preceding the winter solstice, or Yule.Each candle is lit along with its consecutive candles in the array, and each has a rune from the beginning of the Elder Futhark associated with it, for blessings and meditations.

Modern heathens often observe this holiday on Thursdays. My housemate, who is leading our celebrations, opted for Sunday in our house, to coincide with the day of the week the Solstice occurs on this year. (Also, our house has mismatched sleep schedules, and mid-week celebrations are hard to coordinate).

Do you & your witchy comrades celebrate Sunwait, or something similar?
Do you have folk-Catholic advent traditons?
This year, Hanukkah will fall during Sunwait as well, concluding right afterwards.
What other light-keeping holidays do you, your ancestors, your neighbors, or your families observe in this dark season?

These last few years it seems all this astrology and, as the kids say, "woo-woo", have become ever more popular. People seem to be practicing more and more. That's cool so long as people don't turn their backs on science and reason.
